ASTROLOGY INSTRUCTION:

FUN WITH HOUSES AND SIGNS

The Astrology Chart is the display of a clock (we will set it in motion at a future date).  The houses are similar to the face of the clock.  The signs rotate clockwise once a day.  The planets rotate counter  clockwise at varying speeds (Sun 1 degree per day.  Moon 12 - 13 degrees per day).  Your natal chart is a snapshot of the cosmic clock at the time of your birth.  If there is an error in the birth time (for whatever reason), this will cause the snapshot to be too soon or too late.  The chart must be corrected (called rectification of a chart).  This is no different from purchasing a new watch.  You don't throw the watch away because it has the wrong time, you just set it.  After that it works great.
The date of birth is rarely a problem.  Usually the error is down in the range of minutes to hours.  An error of 2 hours will cause the sign degree on the ascendant (eastern horizon) to change by about 30 degrees (it varies).  In the same 2 hours, the Moon will have moved about 1 degree and the Sun will have moved much less.  In a natal chart, this small motion of the planets isn't a problem.  However the change in the sign and degree on the ascendant will put the planets in the wrong houses.  An error of a few minutes can make a chart close but not always right.  An error of 6 hours will make a chart almost unrecognizable.  As we go from the general to the specific, it should become obvious if your chart needs to be corrected or not.  It shows up (usually) as a planet close to a cusp.  You will notice that the indication would be right if it were just in the next (or previous) house.  Or the wrong sign on a cusp. In fact, you could even try different times for your birth time and see if your chart becomes more or less accurate.  However now is not the time.  Right now, just be aware of the problem.

  Now let's do something useful.

The Ascendant / Descendant line cuts the chart into two halves, an upper and a lower half.  This is a division of your life into public (top) and private (bottom).  Look at your chart and notice how many of the planets are in the upper half, and how many are in the lower half.

DIVISIONS    PUBLIC, PRIVATE

PUBLIC HOUSES  - DAWN TO DUSK  - LIGHT OF DAY
  - EXTROVERT
  - EXPRESSION GAINS RECOGNITION
PRIVATE HOUSES  - DUSK TO DAWN  - DARK OF NIGHT
  - INTROVERT
  - DEVELOPMENT IN SECRET

The Midheaven / Nadir line cuts the chart into two halves, a left and a right half.  This is a division of your life by how much you develop on your own (left) or with others (right).  Notice the number of planets on the left and right sides.

DIVISIONS  -   PERSONAL,  OTHERS

PERSONAL HOUSES  - MIDNIGHT TO NOON  - DARKEST OF NIGHT TO BRIGHTEST OF DAY
  - MORE PERSONAL CHOICES OF LIFE
  - DEVELOPED THROUGH PERSONAL EFFORT
OTHER HOUSES   - NOON TO MIDNIGHT  - BRIGHTEST OF DAY TO DARKEST OF NIGHT
  - PERSONAL CHOICES DEPENDENT ON OTHERS
  - DEVELOPS THROUGH OTHERS

Now you can expand this and notice the quadrants.  Most planets in the top left quadrant would make you more of a self starting extrovert.  If most of your planets are in the bottom left quadrant you would be a self starting introvert.  Many planets in the bottom right quadrant would give you more of a tendency to work quietly with others but if the top right quadrant is heavily favored, your work with others would gain notoriety.
You can expand this even further and notice where the signs in those halves in the natural chart are in your chart.  The signs and the houses (as they are in the natural chart) have similar meanings.  Where have the signs moved to in your chart?

Let us now divide the chart into thirds.  Now we have personal, companionship and social divisions.  Look at your chart and see if you have a preponderance of planets in one or more of these divisions.  Or no planets in one or more of these divisions.  The more planets in a grouping the more important that division is to you.

If the signs in your chart are different from their natural place, what areas of your life (houses) have become personal houses.  What signs have moved into the personal houses.  Blend the ideas of the symbolism.  Does it sound like you it's describing?  What house has Pisces on the cusp?  Does the meaning of the house sound like where you feel limited or inspired?  What sign is on the cusp of the 12th house?  Is this a limitation or a belief that others see (above the horizon hence hard to hide).  What house has Aries on the cusp? Does the meaning of the house sound like things through which you express your personality?  What sign is on the ascendant?  Is this how others see you?  Are you starting to see how much information is contained in a chart?  We've barely begun.  And, don't forget, we're only dealing with one of the dials of the clock.  Simple rules keep taking on new meaning depending upon how we look at them.  Welcome to a symbolic language.

The universe is divided into 4 elements: Fire, Earth, Air, and Water.  Each of the signs of the same element are 120 degrees apart (trine (we'll get to that later)).   The important thing is that signs of the same element share an affinity in qualities, but each sign expresses it differently.  There is an easy flow of energy between signs of the same element.   We just keep repeating the process. Where is the sign in your chart and what house is it on the cusp of? Blend the two. What sign is now on the cusp of the house?  Blend the two meanings.  Any planets in one of the houses will increase the importance of that house.

As with learning to read any language, this process can be tedious and the information gained may seem repetitive (our computer delineation suffers from this).  The human is better than the computer.  With a little bit of practice, the story contained in the chart will almost jump out at you.  This is like anything else, practice makes it easier and you get better at it.  Most of the associations we discuss on this page can be taken in at a glance once you are used to them.  Further depth usually just confirms what you have already seen.
The signs and houses have various power levels.  The Cardinal signs and Angular houses have the most power.  The Fixed signs and Succedent houses are middle level power.  The Mutable signs and Cadent houses have the weakest power.  Combinations of the power levels gives you nine different power levels possible in any given house (disregarding other factors).  Notice that the fire signs are always opposite the air sign of the same quadruplicity.  The earth and water signs are likewise opposite (180 degrees).  To exert energy in one house, by necessity, involves an awareness in the opposite end of the see-saw, and possibly opposition.
Notice, also, that the see-saw of the fire and air form a cross with the see-saw of the earth and water.  These are competing interests and are usually at cross purposes.  Usually these competing interests cause conflict and require a choice.  They are 90 degrees apart (square).   We just keep repeating the process. Where is the sign, in your chart, what house is it on the cusp of? Blend the two. What sign is now in the cusp of the house?  Blend the two meanings.  Any planets in one of the houses will increase the importance of that house.
